Our staff of Sun City water conservation expert knows that you've probably moved here to enjoy your retirement. This is why we are always trying to help you find ways to lower your water and utility bill without sacrificing the luxuries that you have worked so long to earn. With this in mind, we would like to show you a few of the best ways to reduce your water usage and keep your water heating bills down without having to sacrifice water pressure or temperature. If you use these methods, you'll still be able to take long, hot showers and save money while doing so.
Install aerators on all of your faucet heads. Buying a low flow faucet can be a bit pricey. Most models cost over $100. There is a much cheaper option that will give your faucet the same efficiency as a new WaterSaver certified model; an aerator. These small attachments screw right on to your existing faucet and only cost about $10 each. Putting one on each of your faucets could save you up to 500 gallons of water per month.
Purchase a low flow shower head. Older shower heads can deliver a whopping 4 to 5 gallons of water per minute. By installing a low flow shower head, this rate can be cut in half. Low flow fixtures deliver the same shower experience with 2.5 gallons of water, or less, per minute. Now you can shower for twice as long for the same cost!
Insulate your water heater and hot water lines. By buying an insulated sleeve or cover for your storage type water heater you can cut your water heating costs by as much as 45%. Insulating your hot water pipes reduced the amount of radiant heat loss between the tank and the faucet. With insulation on the pipes you can turn your water heater down 5 to 10 degrees without noticing a difference at the tap. This can save you up to 10% on your water heating bills.
